When is it too Hot for our Pets?

Dogs love nothing more than going outside for a daily walk, but with the recent extremely hot weather, it might be best to know when is it too hot our furrypetbuddies.

As the heat index rises, it’s vital that we keep our furryfriends safe in the heat. Their body temperature is much higher than ours, approximately 101 degrees F to 102.5 degrees F, with an upper level of normal close to 103 degrees F. So ambient air temperature feels hotter to them than it does to us, which makes them more susceptible to heat stroke. Mostly, around 106 degress F, nearly 50% of our pet dogs experience heat stroke.

You should take extra caution when bringing your pup outside when the temperature rises

It's important to be aware of the dangers of hot weather for dogs.

As many people associate heat stroke in dogs with pets sitting in cars, but the truth is that it can happen in your backyard. If the temperature is uncomfortable for people, then the same goes for dogs.

So how hot is too hot for dogs to be outside?

Depending on their breed, size, and activity level, probably anything within the higher range of that temperature window.

Air temperature: Generally, if you're uncomfortable outside, it's likely too hot for your dog for an extended period. While some sources say temperatures up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius) might be tolerable for short walks with access to shade and water, it's best to err on the side of caution.

Humidity: High humidity makes it harder for dogs to pant effectively, which is how they cool themselves. So even at lower temperatures, high humidity can be dangerous.

Dog's breed: Short-faced breeds, brachycephalic breeds like pugs and bulldogs, have more trouble panting and regulating their temperature.

Dog's age and health: Older dogs, overweight dogs, and dogs with health conditions are more at risk for heatstroke.

Dog’s Size: The size of your pup has a lot to do with how safe it is for them to be in hot climates. Large dogs should be supervise more frequently than small-to-medium-sized dogs.

Dog’s weight: Obese and overweight dogs are more likely to overheat in high temperatures, as well as mild weather with moderate activity. Is your dog overweight? If so, being exposed to warmer temperatures could be risky.

No matter how careful you are, it’s always possible for your dog to overheat. Constant access to shade and water are the most important to consider during the hot summer months.
