Paws For Thoughts Before Bringing Home A Furryfriend

Paws For Thoughts Before Bringing Home A Furryfriend

Owning a dog can be an amazing experience, bringing joy, companionship, and even some health benefits into your life. But it's definitely a big commitment, a big responsibility! but it can definitely be incredibly rewarding.

Some of the greatest moments in life include the day we met our pets for the first time, and the day we adopted them and they came home with us.

Here are some things to consider before you bring a furry friend home:

  • Lifestyle fit: Think about your lifestyle. Do you have time for daily walks and playtime? How much space do you have in your home? There are dog breeds for all sorts of lifestyles, from high-energy huskies that need miles of running to mellow pugs who are content with couch cuddles. Research different breeds to find one that meshes well with your day-to-day life.

  • Make Your Home Pet-Friendly: It is highly important to go through your home now, before you bring a new pet home, to search out hazards and get them out of the way or out of the house. This includes cabinets at pet level, counter tops, bottles of chemical on the floor, small toys, electric cords and curtain cords. And it doesn’t stop there. You will also need to check your home and yard for toxic plants for dogs, and if you carry a purse or bag, you will need to find and discard any potential dangers – like sugar-free gum, which often contains xylitol.

  • Choose an Age and Breed Appropriate Food: Not all pet foods are alike. Some are better than others, and some make claims that are not always backed by facts. It would be easy to just grab the pet food bag or can with the nicest design on the cover, but that is not what is going to guarantee our pets’ long term health. Choose the best food for your dog  and always look for a diet labeled complete and balanced.

  • Financial commitment: Dogs aren't cheap. There's food, vet bills, training classes, and pet supplies. Consider unexpected costs like emergency vet care as well.

  • Time commitment: Dogs are social creatures and need attention. Plan on walks or playtime several times a day. You'll also need to factor in training time. Puppies require a lot of socialization and training, while adult dogs may still need obedience classes.

  • Training: Speaking of training, all dogs need it. This helps ensure your dog is a well-behaved companion. Be prepared to invest time and patience in training your dog.

  • Outfit Your Pet with Proper ID: Finally, ensure that your puppy or kitten is properly outfitted with ID so that if he should ever get loose — and it does happen to most everyone eventually — you will have him returned safely to you. Have your contact information on your pet’s collar, either on a tag or printed directly onto the collar (the latter can be custom ordered or made by you).

  • Lifespan: Dogs can live for 10 to 15 years or more. Are you ready for a long-term commitment?

If you think a dog is a good fit for you, you're in for an enriching and rewarding experience!
